  2. modern times to propose the existence of 
  3. atoms, which he considered to be the 
  4. smallest parts of matter. He produced the 
  5. first list of relative atomic masses, 
  6. Absorption of Gases 1805. He was also the 
  7. first scientist to note and record 
  8. colour-blindness. From experiments with 
  9. gases he noted that the proportions of two 
  10. components combining to form another gas
  11. were always constant. From this he suggested
  12. that if substances combine in simple
  13. numerical ratios then the macroscopic weight
  14. proportions represent the relative atomic
  15. masses of those substances.
